A Stunning Mid-Century Makeover in Vancouver

Articles & Interest

It’s the stuff of dreams – transforming your dated home into an award-winning mid-century modern mansion. That’s exactly what RodRozen Designs accomplished for one Vancouver, British Columbia family. Renovating the entire home (costing a cool $1.5 million +) meant the interior design and construction firm was creating a space for the family to host and entertain large parties.

Modern Mid-Century with Rustic Charm, Please

“The homeowners wanted a grandiose residence with an addition while retaining the unique rustic charm,” reads the RodRozen Designs award-winning entry in the 2019 CHBA National Awards for Housing Excellence, powered by Avid Ratings Canada.

While the original flat roof section of the home was demolished, its A-frame was left intact. Using steel structural framing, RodRozen Designs reconstructed the main floor (expanding the ceiling height to nine feet) and created an entirely new second floor. Carrying through the existing structural beams on the exterior to the new section of the home creates a fluid, uniform look.

“The beautiful bronze powder room doors were once used on an elevator in the downtown Vancouver Marine Building,” reads the entry. “They’re a highlight of the redesign that speaks to the city’s heritage.”

Refurbishing and modernizing the BC slate floors and rustic fireplaces respects the home’s original character and creates a beautiful contrast against new luxurious materials such as quartz stone counters and tile wall features.

Expanding on the original blueprints, RodRozen Designs made room for new spaces in which the family can unwind or exercise.  Floor-to-ceiling windows and folding doors were installed, creating a seamless indoor-outdoor living space that leads to the family’s pool area.

New technology improves the home’s functionality

Completely upgrading the home’s electrical, plumbing and heating systems was necessary to bring it up to today’s standards. Reconfiguring the plumbing allowed RodRozen Designs to install a more modern kitchen and another bathroom.

Energy efficiency elements are now found throughout the home. A new dual AC system was installed for the ultimate in comfort year-round and new heaters were added in the pool. The modern kitchen includes high-end ENERGY STAR rated appliances and energy efficient lighting is found throughout. An advanced home automation system allows the family to control these technologies from anywhere at any time.

Through harsh winter wind and rain, the award-winning BC company persevered to bring the family’s vision to life. “With an impressive provenance…this now grandiose home is nothing less than spectacular,” reads the RodRozen award entry.
