What was the challenge?
The renovation of the home was primarily driven by the needs of a growing family, who required more space and improved functionality. The existing storey-and-a-half home lacked adequate room and modern conveniences, prompting the owners to seek enhancements that would accommodate their expanding household. Key motivations included creating additional space, enhancing energy efficiency, and updating the home’s aesthetics to align with contemporary tastes. Furthermore, the family desired to increase natural light and improve circulation within the home, ensuring a more open and inviting atmosphere. These changes were essential not only for the immediate comfort of the family but also to ensure the home remained a valuable and enjoyable space for years to come.
What was delivered?
The renovation project transformed the original storey-and-a-half structure into a fully functional two-storey home, featuring a new main floor layout and full-size second floor. By building full-height second-floor walls, the upstairs area was expanded by 400 square feet, now including a third bedroom, a second full bath, and ample storage space under a vaulted timber ceiling with visible structural elements. The main floor was reimagined by converting existing spaces, such as the bath and spare TV room, into a mudroom, powder room, and kitchen island. Open floor joists allowed the removal of load-bearing walls, maximizing natural light and enhancing sightlines. The exterior design adhered to neighborhood aesthetics while incorporating modern finishes and energy-efficient upgrades like high-performance windows and insulation. Natural materials such as birch, maple, and oak were central to the home’s theme, with custom millwork and a clean, understated exterior. Each design choice served a functional purpose, ensuring the compact 1600 sq ft home met the family’s needs, from integrated seating with storage to deep window sills that provided additional seating.
