What was the challenge?

The homeowners envisioned transforming their 1990s townhouse into a sleek and contemporary living space that would cater to their refined tastes and lifestyle. With a focus on creating an open and airy layout, they sought to incorporate clean lines, minimalist aesthetics, and an abundance of natural light. By infusing the interiors with a neutral color palette and high-quality materials, they aimed to achieve a timeless elegance that would appeal to those seeking a sophisticated urban retreat. Through careful planning and attention to detail, the homeowners were able to realize their vision of a modern, welcoming sanctuary that exuded both style and comfort.

What was delivered?

The 1990s two-level townhouse underwent a complete renovation, transforming it into a contemporary space with a minimalist aesthetic tailored to the needs of clients who enjoy hosting gatherings while still valuing their own private areas. The use of brushed Cambrian granite in a midnight-black hue is a consistent element throughout the home, from the island in the kitchen to the countertops, backsplash, baseboards, door-casings, and even the stair treads and risers. This material choice creates a cohesive look and feel, with vertical accents in the same granite adding a touch of sophistication, particularly in the bathrooms where they eliminate visible joints.

One of the key changes made was expanding the kitchen island to an impressive 10×5-foot size, complete with mitred edges and a waterfall finish, now seamlessly aligned with the cabinetry. By opting to forego an eating bar, more space was freed up for an expandable dining table, perfect for the couple’s frequent entertaining needs. The living room saw a transformation as well, with the fireplace moved closer to the kitchen and replaced with a modern three-sided, suspended insert surrounded by floor-to-ceiling finishes. Other notable features include a convenient main floor powder room with a tankless toilet and a striking primary ensuite boasting large marble-inspired tiles with vertical accent-stripes in midnight-black, a spacious two-person shower with luxurious features, and a single offset vanity-sink ideal for differing schedules and extra counter space. Furthermore, the addition of an attached, over-height garage with separate areas for “his” office and private gym ensures work and workouts can be kept separate from the family spaces, catering to the individual interests and needs of the homeowners.
