The Heritage Heart

What was the challenge?

Designed for a family of six with four active children and a homeschooling lifestyle, this renovation was driven by the need for improved functionality, better flow, and more connected gathering spaces within the home’s existing footprint. The main floor’s compartmentalized layout limited visibility and everyday movement, making it challenging to support family activities. By removing an underutilized bathroom and pantry, the homeowners created the opportunity to relocate the kitchen to the center of the home, establishing clear sightlines, enhancing supervision, and fostering a more open and collaborative environment for daily living, learning, and entertaining.

What was delivered?

The Heritage Heart transformed a traditional townhouse into a bright, heritage-inspired hub centered around a beautifully reimagined kitchen. The renovation introduced a 9’6″ multifunctional island for meal preparation, dining, and schoolwork, while a new 7-foot opening seamlessly connected the kitchen to a flexible dining and sitting area. Warm walnut cabinetry, artisan-laid zellige tile, a hand-troweled plaster hood, patinaed brass accents, reeded glass cabinetry, and refined millwork create a timeless aesthetic. Significant structural work, including the removal of a load-bearing wall and installation of a structural beam, was carefully coordinated alongside relocated plumbing and HVAC systems to maintain visual continuity. Sustainability and comfort were enhanced through LED lighting, automated Lutron controls, upgraded insulation, low-flow fixtures, formaldehyde-free cabinetry, and zero-VOC finishes. Despite the complexities of strata approvals and completing construction while the family remained in residence, the project successfully delivered a highly functional, healthy, and elegant space that blends seamlessly with the home’s existing character.
