What was the challenge?

100-year-old protected tree necessitated coordination with City on second-floor addition. Helical piles needed to safeguard root system Special hangars for structure avoided cross bracing which would obstruct views

What was delivered?

Preserved overall footprint of the house and the heritage look from street view. Adding second-storey addition at rear to provide “free-floating” master bedroom, meeting homeowners’ dream of a “treehouse”, sitting on 2 15’ helical piles with large awning windows to enhance views Exterior finishing on addition is distinct but design elements allow it to blend, with similar roof pitch and subordinate scale. Custom structural brackets and posts avoid cross bracing that would have obstructed view New walk-in master closet has 14” sun tunnel. Uncovered interior barnboard sheathing in stairway. Preserved along with as much of the mouldings and trim as possible to ensure historic nature of house respected. Neutral grey colours on walls work with client’s relaxed style. Colour used throughout to add personality, balanced with warm woods and comfortable upholstery. Flooring consistent throughout in terms of direction and materials. Pale wood flooring finish helps to reflect daylight.
