What was the challenge?

The decision to renovate the basement stemmed from the clients’ desire to create a comfortable and accessible living space for their aging relative. By transforming their unfinished basement into a fully completed suite, the clients aimed to facilitate a harmonious merging of households. This arrangement was designed to offer their relative a private and welcoming environment while allowing for greater family connectivity. The motivation was rooted in providing a space that balanced independence with familial proximity, ensuring the relative could enjoy a luxurious yet functional living area without the need to move to an external facility.

What was delivered?

The project involved a comprehensive transformation of the undeveloped basement into a modern, fully finished suite that doubled the home’s living space. The design included a spacious bedroom, a full ensuite, a large walk-in closet, a kitchenette, as well as living and dining areas. A spare room was also created to accommodate workout equipment and storage. To achieve a contemporary feel, the renovation employed strategic lighting and a neutral color palette with bold accents, such as a charcoal cabinet and matte black fixtures. Existing structural elements like posts and plumbing stacks were cleverly integrated into the floor plan, maximizing both space and functionality. A custom wood slat feature wall served as the living area’s focal point, ingeniously concealing the electrical panel. Materials were chosen to complement the warm tones of rustic vinyl flooring, and brushed nickel accents were used in the bathroom to add a touch of elegance. The layout facilitated seamless flow between the suite’s interconnected spaces, ensuring practicality and aesthetic appeal, while maintaining privacy for the bedroom and ensuite.
