Best Renovated Space – 2021 CHBA National Awards for Housing Excellence
Water damage from a leak in this client’s basement was the catalyst for a full basement renovation. The homeowners used this renovation as an opportunity to personalize and update their basement. The right layout and designation of space were necessary for a variety of intended purposes. By integrating custom cabinetry and shelving throughout the basement the homeowners gained much-needed storage space, display areas, and entertainment zones.
A lot of considerations were made when developing the design of the various living areas. The main staircase, back staircase, and exterior entry door locations played a major role in determining the best functional layout for the homeowners’ needs. They decided to approach the layout in three different zones. The first zone is the main living space, which is ideal for socializing and entertaining with access to the wet bar, fireplace, and seating area. The second zone is the media room, which is set back from the main living area with unfinished utility space on two sides. This separate space is equipped with an audio entertainment system that is further removed from the open area of the basement for sound control. The third zone includes the exterior entryway and staircase. This area was designed with the option of using these rooms together to create a separate suite.
What was once an underutilized and outdated space was turned into a fully functional and beautiful living space for the whole family. Custom cabinetry throughout was a solution to many of the storage and display needs the homeowners requested. The important and extensive book collection was able to find a permanent and visible home in the main part of the living space amongst the new gas fireplace and bench seating.
The cabinetry continues further into the space in the form of a beautiful wet bar. The soft blue-green tone of the cabinets pairs wonderfully with the wood accents, which are carried throughout the cabinetry design in other areas of the basement. The custom shelving and the media room French doors are design elements that help to create a space that boasts function while reflecting the homeowner’s personality. The bar backsplash tile, living room light fixture, and vibrant art collection were key elements on the client’s wish list.
