Urban Lounge Basement Suite

What was the challenge?

The homeowner had an unfinished basement with a wish for a luxurious masculine suite to entertain and relax with friends. Envisioning a space filled with rich leather seating and a classic pool table, the plans were set to create an inviting atmosphere. With the addition of a sleek bar and ambient lighting, the basement was destined to become the ultimate retreat for social gatherings.

What was delivered?

The homeowner desired a moody, comfortable, and masculine lounge that would feature dramatic focal points and amenities. To achieve this, custom vertical slat walls were fabricated at the stairwells and highlighted with LED stair lighting. The custom bar was enhanced with burnished solid metal floating shelves, a beverage armoire, and an Energy Star built-in bar fridge, creating an inviting stand-up bar for guests to enjoy refreshments. The theatre zone boasted comfortable down-filled soft leather seating and a custom media wall with backlit display shelving, while warmth and drama were added by wrapping the walls in rich textured wallpaper. A full bath was equipped with spa features, including a rain shower and accent mood lighting. The bedroom featured lounge seating, soft wall sconce lighting on the headboard wall, and a walk-in closet with natural light. Energy efficiency, warmth, and sound absorption were improved with Rockwool insulation installed between floor joists, complemented by ERV and HRV ventilators and a low-flow toilet for additional energy savings. Integration with the upper level was considered in the flooring choice and wall color to ensure a seamless flow to the upper level. Challenges included the ICF foundation, which complicated plumbing and electrical modifications, support beam positioning, relocating plumbing from the original legal suite design, and addressing the spatial requirements in a long, narrow space.
