What was the challenge?

The homeowners aim to renovate their basement to ensure it aligns seamlessly with the rest of their newly renovated home. They envision creating an inspiring space where they can relax by a cozy fire. Additionally, they want to entertain guests in a comfortable and inviting environment.

What was delivered?

The transformation of the basement from a dark, outdated dungeon into a welcoming space dubbed “cool, calm and collected” has made it a source of pride for the homeowners, who are now eager to entertain guests in this revitalized area. Emphasizing the “cool” aspect, the design steered away from stereotypical mancave aesthetics to maintain harmony with the warm tones present throughout the rest of the home, while incorporating stylish elements suitable for entertainment. This was achieved by integrating warm woods, rough-cut stone, and accents of black metal and glass, allowing features like whiskey and wine collections to stand out. For the “calm” component, a meditation space was essential for the yoga-instructing homeowner, leading to the conversion of a bedroom with stunning river and mountain views into a serene yoga area, complemented by a soothing, neutral color palette throughout the basement. As for “collected,” the homeowners, being avid wine collectors, required a design that showcased their extensive collection. This need was met by transforming an underused glass-enclosed gym into a practical, chilled wine room, with a strategically placed wine wall serving as a captivating focal point. Ultimately, the basement’s cohesive style with the rest of the renovated home has added significant value to this ridge-top property.
