Seven-Acre Home

What was the challenge?

As minimalists, the owners wanted the interior and exterior to reflect their simplistic style and love for the natural environment surrounding them. Through many consultations, the decision was made to take a Scandinavian design approach. At first glance, you will notice the red brick with a black exterior and sharp lines of the home. Large floor-to-ceiling windows allow for ample natural light and bring the surrounding environment indoors. Provisions were made to allow for the expansive windows to continue into the basement.

This home was designed to transition through the family’s life stages. The second-floor bedroom that the children share has been planned to easily be transformed into two separate bedrooms as they enter their teenage years and desire privacy. The main floor has been designed to accommodate aging grandparents with provisions such as a barrier-free shower, while the second floor can be converted once again to house a master suite.

What was delivered?

The interior is filled with natural elements including exposed concrete basement walls, heated concrete floors that are mixed with aggregates specifically picked by the clients, including glass and angle iron, and a variety of wood accents. Vaulted ceilings provide an open and spacious feeling as warm, natural tone materials bring an earthy feel. The entry is centrally located, providing a buffer between the social and private spaces – perfect for a family who loves entertaining but also seeks privacy. The private section of the home is split over two stories, with the main floor including the master bedroom and ensuite, and a large mudroom and laundry room situated perfectly upon entry for an active acreage lifestyle.
