What was the challenge?

The renovation of this young family’s home was driven by a desire to completely transform their kitchen into a modern, energy-efficient, and highly functional space that seamlessly connects to the outdoor living area. With grandparents living downstairs, the family needed a layout that accommodates their lifestyle, providing convenience and improved liveability. Their primary goals included achieving a modern look while enhancing the home’s energy efficiency and functionality. One of the most important considerations was addressing a family member’s respiratory special needs, which required a significant portion of the budget to ensure excellent air quality. The renovation aimed to create an ideal environment for family gatherings, daily activities, and a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces

What was delivered?

The project involved reimagining the upper floor’s layout, relocating the kitchen to the back of the home to connect with a large covered deck, thereby enhancing the indoor-outdoor experience. The design included reframing the roof with a vaulted ceiling extending from the front to the back, incorporating three new skylights that brighten the kitchen with natural light. The walls were removed to reconfigure the space, positioning all bedrooms on one side and the kitchen on the other. The use of 10-foot glass sliders and triangular windows maximizes light, while white oak cabinetry and Caesarstone countertops provide a sleek, modern aesthetic. Energy efficiency was a priority, with triple-glazed windows, a high-density insulation system, and a tankless hot water system. The kitchen boasts a generous island, integrated appliances, and durable vinyl plank flooring, allowing for multiple workstations and easy interaction. The renovation achieved BuiltGreen-Platinum and NetZeroReady certifications, reflecting the family’s commitment to sustainability and functionality. The design ensures ample room for family activities while maintaining a cohesive look throughout the home, making it a perfect space for an active family.
