What was the challenge?

The homeowners chose to renovate their long‑owned family cottage to update and personalize the space, transforming it from a dated structure into a warm, inviting retreat. After more than 30 years of ownership, they envisioned a rustic yet refined cottage that better reflected how they wanted to enjoy their summers with children and grandchildren. Working within the strict bylaws of Riding Mountain National Park, they sought to modernize the property while maintaining harmony with its natural surroundings.

What was delivered?

The renovation included a complete interior and exterior transformation, reimagining every inch of the cottage within its existing footprint. The front living space was entirely rebuilt with natural timber beams and soaring 20-foot ceilings, while the lakeside façade was enhanced with 10-foot arched windows showcasing the landscape. A large wood-burning fireplace with a natural stone chimney became a central feature inside and out. The exterior received a blend of natural timbers, cedar shakes, and green-shaded siding, complemented by a custom kitchen featuring natural stone slab countertops. Interior spaces were redesigned for functionality, including reconfigured bedroom wings, a more formal guest bathroom, a relocated laundry area with custom barn doors, and a new mechanical room. Upgrades such as a forced-air furnace, air conditioning, and enhanced insulation converted the seasonal cottage into a comfortable year‑round escape, all achieved while navigating the park’s strict guidelines for size, exterior design, and window proportions.
