Celebrated Creations: RenoMark’s Finest Transformations
The 2025 CHBA National Awards for Housing Excellence recognized My House Design/Build Team Ltd. of Surrey, BC, for their outstanding work on Elevated Living—a four-storey whole home renovation focused on accessibility, functionality, and long-term livability. Winning the Best Whole Home Renovation in the $500,001 – $800,000 category, this project sets a new standard in accessible home design.
Accessible Design for Aging in Place
The homeowners, a senior couple, needed a solution that would allow them to age in place comfortably. The original stair-lift only reached two levels, limiting mobility. Their renovation goals included eliminating barriers, improving layout flow, and enhancing safety—while preserving their connection to the scenic Belcarra views.
Structural Renovation and Accessibility Upgrades
To support the redesign, My House Design/Build Team Ltd. reconstructed key areas of the home, correcting unlevel flooring and undersized support beams. One of the most transformative features is a Garaventa residential elevator, offering full access to all four floors. The elevator, powered by a backup generator, replaces the outdated lift and is seamlessly integrated into the home’s layout and exterior design.
A new cedar accent wall in the foyer creates a bold visual element while complementing the structure’s updated entryway.
“The clients originally installed a stair lift while their aging mother lived with them. It ate up a lot of space on their stairs and wasn’t super attractive. With evening out the flooring on the middle floor (to make the kitchen at the same height as the rest of the space), that dictated that we redesign the stairs. With that, it made much more sense to install an elevator to let these clients age in place. This way, all floors are accessible, regardless of the clients’ physical abilities. “ – My House Design/Build Team Ltd.
Modern Kitchen Remodel with Custom Features
The kitchen renovation was the catalyst for the project. The team reconfigured the main floor by relocating the kitchen to the view side, lowering it by two steps for better integration. The result: a functional kitchen layout with white oak cabinetry, roll-out drawers, tray dividers, and a walk-in pantry for increased storage.
The kitchen’s blue island with built-in seating adds contrast and maximizes usability. It features a Caesarstone countertop, matte black fixtures, and a dishwasher oriented toward the view. A nearby coffee bar with bi-fold doors and a chevron wine rack adds convenience and appeal for entertaining.
Strategic space planning led to the addition of a second prep sink, built-in recycling station, and enhanced pantry organization—essential for homeowners seeking convenience and independence.
Functional Layout and Energy-Efficient Systems
Designed with accessibility in mind, the renovation includes widened hallways and doorways, in-floor radiant heating, and a fully electric HRV ventilation system with a heat pump and electric boiler for consistent climate control.
Additional upgrades included custom cedar woodwork, European tilt-and-turn windows, tile backsplashes inspired by natural textures, and high-efficiency appliances from Bosch, Wolf, Fulgor, and Miele. These energy-efficient upgrades ensure long-term performance and lower utility costs.
Overcoming Renovation Challenges
The sloped property created logistical challenges. Materials had to be craned in, and the team leveled the entry tile to resolve drainage issues. A key structural post was incorporated into the kitchen cabinetry design, maintaining aesthetics while optimizing storage.
“One of the greatest challenges of this project was managing the significant structural and logistical obstacles posed by the steep slope of the property and the existing condition of the home. The original floors were uneven and spread across multiple elevations, which required major restructuring to create a cohesive, level main floor. This involved installing large beams and structural supports, many of which had to be craned or hoisted into place due to the limited driveway access and steep site conditions. To integrate in-floor hydronic heating, self-leveling concrete was pumped into the home, carefully coordinated with the site’s accessibility constraints. Much of the material had to be “hand-bombed” up the slope and into the house, demanding both creative problem-solving and incredible teamwork. Despite these challenges, the result is a structurally sound, beautifully reimagined home that not only meets the client’s needs but also demonstrates the dedication and expertise of our entire team” – My House Design/Build Team Ltd
