The 2025 CHBA National Awards for Housing Excellence recognized a standout bathroom renovation by CCR Build + Remodel Inc., in partnership with Martin Jesko Custom Cabinetry and Integrated Electrical Solutions. This award-winning ensuite remodel in London, Ontario showcases a smart blend of modern design, craftsmanship, and functional upgrades.
A Vision for a Modern Ensuite
The homeowners of this century-old home set out to update their dated primary ensuite. Their goal: create a modern bathroom retreat that balanced comfort, style, and functionality. With support from New Wave Design, the renovation redefined the space, prioritizing both layout optimization and visual impact.
Ensuite Renovation Highlights
A key change was relocating the toilet and bidet into a new private water closet, fitted with a TOTO wall-mounted washlet. This opened the layout for a freestanding Slik Evoque soaker tub, framed by custom walnut millwork and placed to take full advantage of garden views.
A floating vanity with six large drawers added practical bathroom storage, while keeping the countertop clutter-free. The design incorporated black marbled tiles across the floor and shower for a cohesive, high-impact look. Precision-cut tile work ensured smooth drainage in the curbless shower.
Subtle but impactful features like Fittes flush-mount vents and Z-Channel trim helped maintain a clean, modern aesthetic. The combination of dark walnut finishes, white surfaces, and brushed gold accents added visual contrast and elevated the overall design.
Efficient Use of Space
This London Ontario bathroom renovation was part of a larger home update. To make space for the water closet, the team reallocated square footage from an adjacent walk-in closet. This strategic layout change improved privacy without compromising function.
Although the shower footprint stayed the same, removing an interior wall and raising the ceiling to nine feet made the space feel open and connected to the rest of the modern home interior. The tub deck—positioned for light and views—adds a spa-like atmosphere.
Renovation Challenges and Solutions
Structural challenges emerged after removing the outdated sunken tub. Floor joists didn’t extend beneath the old fixture, requiring a new floor support system to handle the weight of the new tub and ensure safety for the level below.
Another key challenge was protecting the home’s original plaster ceiling and crown moulding—details no longer in production. The renovation team preserved these elements to maintain the home’s architectural integrity while modernizing the space around them.
