What was the challenge?

The renovation was inspired by the homeowners’ desire to restore and modernize their 1950s family home, originally built by the current owner’s grandfather. After decades of wear, the house had become drafty, outdated, and dysfunctional for a modern family’s needs. Wanting to preserve the sentimental value and general footprint of the original structure, the son set out to transform the aging residence into a comfortable, efficient, and beautifully updated home for his own family—while respecting a tight budget and the emotional weight that came with renovating a cherished legacy property.

What was delivered?

The resulting project is a complete modernization of both the interior and exterior, introducing a fresh Craftsman aesthetic, improved functionality, and significant energy‑efficiency upgrades. The home received a full exterior redesign featuring warm grey siding, white trim, natural wood posts, stone accents, and a new pitched roof that also covers a spacious back deck for year‑round indoor‑outdoor living. A newly centered, covered front entry enhances curb appeal and improves circulation inside. Indoors, the main floor was reconfigured to create an open, family‑friendly layout with a redesigned kitchen, enlarged dining area, added storage, and premium finishes such as two-tone shaker cabinetry, walnut accents, quartz countertops, and LED lighting. The home now benefits from triple‑glazed windows, a high‑efficiency furnace with UV purification, HRV system, heat pump, tankless hot water, and extensive insulation upgrades. With reclaimed framing materials, redesigned rooms, a new gas fireplace, improved closets, and seamless flow between living spaces, the renovation successfully transforms a cold, dated rancher into a warm, functional, contemporary family home that still honours its 1950s roots.
