What was the challenge?
The homeowners wished to retain the charm of their 1930’s home and needed to maximize the main floor common spaces for their family of four so structural changes were proposed. Removing two obtrusive pillars expands the space between the dining and living rooms making for unobstructed views between them and the kitchen, and also creates space for different furniture arrangements. The complete replacement of the kitchen makes better use of the small footprint by improving storage capacity and functionality. The main floor interiors are modernized but still honour the original character of the home. Many of the home’s original features were maintained for consistency throughout the main floor spaces including refinishing the original arched front door, reusing crystal doorknobs on the interior doors, and recreating window sills in the dining room to match the original sills in the living room. While the main floor footprint has not changed in size, the interior functionality is very much improved and now in alignment with the personal style of the homeowners.
What was delivered?
The overall mood of the space is light, bright, and accented by natural wood and stone finishes. Special design features in the newly renovated spaces include a new interior window feature in the front entry that keeps with the character of the home while giving a brighter and more spacious feeling; a new built-in living room entertainment unit contains all devices, consoles, and keepsakes in one organized place; a new fireplace in the living room with new stone cladding, limestone hearth, and a custom-built white oak mantel to match other new millwork pieces (structural beam cladding, cabinetry above the kitchen peninsula, french doors in the kitchen). Original hardwood flooring on the stairs to the second floor was salvaged, refinished, and completed with a new carpet runner. On the main floor, there is new LVP flooring throughout with decorative flooring inlays in the entry and the main floor hallway.
