2026 CHBA National Awards for Housing Excellence Finalist - Best Kitchen Renovation – under $70,000
What was the challenge?
The renovation was driven by the poor condition and limited functionality of the existing kitchen. The original oak cabinetry was deteriorating and no longer usable, while the overall layout lacked the space needed for both cooking and entertaining. The cramped design made it difficult for the homeowners to comfortably prepare meals or host guests, prompting the need for a complete redesign that would improve usability, storage, and flow.
What was delivered?
The transformed kitchen features a thoughtfully reimagined layout that resolves the original space constraints while introducing striking design elements. Grain-matched walnut cabinetry and floating shelves are paired with full-height white cabinets and a bold blue peninsula that serves as both a visual focal point and a functional centerpiece. The large peninsula includes custom cabinetry on three sides, providing ample storage, a generous work surface, and a seating area. Removing the wall between the kitchen and dining room and eliminating the bulkhead opened up the space, making it feel brighter and more expansive, further enhanced by LED pot lights and strip lighting. Additional upgrades included extending cabinetry by removing an exterior door, integrating a hidden coffee station with retractable doors, and constructing a custom cantilever into the garage to house an antique hutch. Throughout the project, careful consideration was given to maintaining existing mechanical elements while maximizing efficiency, resulting in a cohesive, modern kitchen that seamlessly integrates with the rest of the home.
