What was the challenge?

This retired couple fell in love with the location of their home but because of certain health issues they a needed a space that would cater to their needs. Their wish list included an energy-efficient home, with better air quality. They wanted a healthy, and comfortable home to age-in-place. They also wanted their new space to reflect their mixed design-styles and love of entertainment.

What was delivered?

This 1967 split-level bungalow was completely transformed into a comfortable, healthy ‘forever-home’. The team retained the existing-footprint, foundation and most of the framing, including exterior-roofline. They used best ‘design-practices’ to repurpose/reconfigure the clients home. A mix of ‘cottage-meets-mid-century-modern’ flare was added throughout the design. The newly raised, vaulted-ceilings in the great room completely transformed the feel of the home. They re-purposed the attic’s 55-year-old dimensional-lumber and used it in the new exterior-wall as well as for the vaulted-ceiling’s decorative-beams.

The previously unfinished-basement was transformed into a functional family-room, mudroom, laundry room and storage. On the first floor, the kitchen was completely reconfigured to create an efficient layout, with a large-island perfect for meal-prep/entertaining. By removing the interior walls, they were able to open up the dinning room to create an open concept floorplan that better flows with the rest of the home.

This renovation was built to meet the couples future needs and desire to age-in-place. The team was able to add wider hallways, proper circulation, a curbless showers, backing for support-bars and electric-outlet by stairs for
future optional chairlift. The home is also built to the Net Zero standards, meaning it produces a much energy as it consumes. It features solar panels on the roof, energy efficient windows and better airtightness then the previous build. All in all, this home is built to withstand the test while checking off all the clients current and future needs.
