What was the challenge?
The primary motivation for undertaking this renovation was to enhance energy efficiency, comfort, and overall health within the home. The clients were particularly concerned about health implications, prompting the exclusive use of non-VOC (volatile organic compounds) certified materials throughout the renovation process. This choice was aimed at ensuring a healthier indoor environment by eliminating potentially harmful chemicals. Additionally, the renovation sought to improve energy efficiency, which not only contributes to environmental sustainability but also reduces utility costs for the homeowners. The focus on comfort was achieved by creating a more open and welcoming living space, tailored to the clients’ desire for a healthier and more enjoyable home experience.
What was delivered?
The renovation project involved several strategic upgrades to meet the clients’ needs and budget constraints. A ductless heat pump was installed to replace the existing electric baseboards, while the fireplace was substituted with a high-energy woodstove, significantly enhancing the home’s heating efficiency. The interior layout was reimagined to optimize the use of space; the removal of a bathroom and the old fireplace allowed for an expanded and brighter kitchen area, fostering an open-concept design ideal for social gatherings. To adhere to budget limitations, the renovation creatively sourced non-VOC materials and updated the plumbing, windows, and electrical systems to current code standards. Existing materials, such as floors, doors, and ceiling elements, were extensively repurposed, reducing waste and costs. Key design improvements included the replacement of living room windows with ceiling-height, energy-efficient models, enhancing natural light and creating a solarium-like ambiance. The bathroom was modernized with an integrated bath/shower unit and further enhanced with luxurious features like underfloor heating and a heated towel rack. Energy efficiency was a consistent theme, with the installation of triple-glazed windows and high-efficiency appliances, ensuring the home was both eco-friendly and cost-effective.
