What was the challenge?

The renovation of The Log House was driven by the homeowners’ desire for a more open-concept living space, allowing them to entertain guests seamlessly while enjoying the scenic views of their acreage. As a young family, they wanted to create an inclusive environment where they could interact with guests from the kitchen and have a functional space that accommodated their lifestyle. Additionally, the homeowners were eager to modernize the aesthetic of their aging log home, moving away from the dated ‘orange’ palette that naturally develops in such structures. This transformation was essential not only for aesthetic reasons but also to enhance the home’s functionality, allowing for better communication and visibility, particularly in watching their children come home.

What was delivered?

The renovation project entailed a comprehensive redesign of the kitchen, which was relocated to extend from the living room, facilitating an open-concept layout. This move involved removing walls and closets, thus integrating the kitchen and living areas. To modernize the interior, chinking was applied to refresh the logs, and a light stain was used to revitalize the color palette. Custom cabinetry in deep navy and maple tones was selected, inspired by the sophisticated look of a navy/brown suit, while high-end fixtures such as a unique bridge faucet and quartz ledge complemented the luxury appliances. To increase natural light, new windows were strategically cut into the logs, providing views of the driveway and bus stop. This renovation embraced unique design elements, including an oversized hood with maple detailing, a built-in coffee bar, and hidden pantry doors. Challenges included scribing cabinetry into uneven log surfaces and addressing moisture control by installing a humidifier. Despite the complexities, the renovation successfully integrated functionality, creativity, and elegance into The Log House.
