Ticking All the Boxes – Main Floor Reno

What was the challenge?

The primary reason for the renovation was to transform a dark and compartmentalized main floor into a space that was filled with light, openness, and functionality. The original layout was not conducive to modern living, and the clients desired an environment that would better suit their lifestyle. The aim was to eliminate the cramped and isolated feel of the existing floor plan and replace it with a brighter, more expansive living area. This required a strategic overhaul to bring in more natural light and create a flow that would make the home feel larger and more inviting, all without expanding the footprint of the house.

What was delivered?

The renovation project was ambitious, with a long list of goals set by the clients. They wanted a more spacious and functional kitchen, an office conveniently located near the front door, interior garage access, a mudroom, a new deck entry, and a substantial bar area for entertaining guests. With no budget for an addition, the project posed a challenge, but the design team rose to the occasion by removing most of the main floor walls to open up the space and rerouting the mechanicals without disturbing the finished basement. A vaulted ceiling with a skylight was introduced in the kitchen and family room to enhance space and light, creating a designer’s dream canvas. The renovation included a full glass office wall, light and bright colors throughout, a sun tunnel, new flooring, and paint on the second floor. The transformation achieved all the client’s desires, including a large island, updated lighting, a mudroom with garage access, and a stunning bar area. With creative solutions like a sloped ceiling, the project not only met but exceeded the clients’ expectations, all within their budget.
