What was the challenge?

The renovation was driven by the needs of a multigenerational household—senior grandparents living on the ground level and their son’s young family living upstairs. The homeowners wanted a modern, high‑performance home that supported aging‑in‑place, improved accessibility, and offered clean, healthy air for a family member with respiratory sensitivities. They also wanted a brighter, more open layout with better use of outdoor living spaces, ensuring the home could comfortably and efficiently serve two generations under one roof.

What was delivered?

The project transformed the Surrey home inside and out, beginning with a reframed, vaulted roof designed around the original structure and a full reconfiguration of both floors. The lower level was gutted to create a private three‑bedroom ground‑level suite with two ensuites, its own entry, a mudroom, and dedicated mechanical systems. Upstairs, walls were removed to form an open‑concept kitchen, dining, and living space oriented toward the backyard, featuring 10‑foot glass sliders, triangular windows, and extensive skylights that flood the home with natural light. High‑performance, triple‑glazed Passive‑certified windows, exterior foam insulation, HRV systems, a cold‑climate heat pump, tankless hot water, and UV‑filtered air purification contributed to achieving BuiltGreen Platinum and Net Zero Ready performance. Finishes include white oak cabinetry, quartz countertops, integrated appliances, vinyl plank flooring, and wide halls and doors to support mobility needs. With improved soundproofing, upgraded electrical service, EV charging, and a striking exterior of vinyl, cedar, and Hardie siding, the renovation delivers a healthy, efficient, beautifully cohesive multigenerational home designed for long‑term comfort and connection.
