What was the challenge?
The homeowners set out to transform a tired 1970s cedar-clad dwelling into their forever retreat—one that would blend seamlessly with its natural surroundings and serve as a comfortable, energy-efficient sanctuary. Their goal was to modernize the home’s exterior while embracing the surrounding forest and waterfront setting. By improving energy performance, updating outdated materials, and creating a visual and physical harmony with the landscape, the renovation aimed to capture the calming, rejuvenating spirit of nature.
What was delivered?
Set on a stunning hillside site overlooking the water, the redesigned home now features expansive glass, industrial metal grating walkways, and dark Iron Ore cladding contrasted by warm natural hemlock soffits. Native trees and stone were preserved to maintain privacy and visual integration. A reworked roofline draws the eye up the approach, while new decks, glass railings, and strategically placed windows maximize sunlight and views. Extensive upgrades—metal roofing, high-performance cladding, triple-glazed windows, and mineral wool insulation—ensure durability, seismic stability, and year-round efficiency. Even the timber-framed parking pad was elevated with a stylish carport roof, transforming it into a cohesive architectural element. This project masterfully balances rugged terrain challenges with elegant design, creating a tranquil, functional retreat that feels both modern and deeply rooted in its coastal environment.
