What was the challenge?
Clients needed more space for a growing family and wanted a modern exterior that was consistent with established neighborhood architecture. Additionally, the owners were eager to enhance the energy efficiency of their home to reduce utility costs and support environmental sustainability. They also desired a more open floor plan that would allow for better natural light and improved flow between living spaces. Lastly, the family sought to incorporate smart home features that would offer convenience and add long-term value to their property.
What was delivered?
The exterior massing and proportions of the building are inspired by the surrounding neighborhood architecture, yet it presents a completely new look with modern finishes, materials, and detailing. The original storey-and-a-half roof was removed to construct full-height second-floor walls, enhancing the structure’s vertical presence. A sleek standing-seam black metal roof and fascia contribute to its contemporary appearance, while insulation has been relocated to the exterior of all walls and the roof, accompanied by all-new high-performance windows and doors. The approach to the home is marked by new concrete steps leading to a covered front entry, which is supported by striking fir timber posts, blending traditional elements with modern design.
